Computing

Curriculum Intent
At Sunshine Academy, our intent for the Computing curriculum in EYFS and Key Stage 1 is to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence in a rapidly changing digital world. We aim to ensure that all pupils become confident, responsible, and safe users of technology, developing the foundations of computational thinking and digital literacy that will prepare them for future learning and everyday life.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, computing is introduced through play-based learning and integrated experiences that support the Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design areas of learning. Children explore technology in meaningful contexts, using digital tools to create, communicate, and investigate their environment. They begin to understand cause and effect, develop problem-solving skills, and learn how technology can help them in their daily lives.
In Key Stage 1, pupils build upon these early experiences by learning the fundamental principles of computer science. They begin to understand what algorithms are, how they are implemented as programs, and how digital devices follow precise instructions. Through practical activities and age-appropriate software, pupils develop logical reasoning, sequencing, and debugging skills. They also learn to use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, and retrieve digital content.
Across both EYFS and Key Stage 1, we place a strong emphasis on online safety, ensuring that pupils understand how to use technology respectfully, responsibly, and safely. We aim to foster confident digital citizens who make good choices and understand the importance of keeping personal information private.
Ultimately, our intent is to nurture inquisitive, independent learners who view technology as a powerful tool for creativity, collaboration, and communication — ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the digital world.
Implementation
A weekly computing lesson is taught to all children in Key Stage 1.
ICT is incorporated into other lessons by using Purple Mash.
Work is currently evidenced through Class Logbooks which display examples of pupils' work, ideas and photographic evidence.
The environment is created to support and encourage online safety. All classes have a SAFE poster. Key vocabulary is displayed upon this.
The website is used effectively to keep parents up to date with the curriculum.
Online safety lessons are taught weekly, using Project Evolve. We celebrate Safer Internet day each year and this is evidenced in the Class Computing Logbook.
Children have access to iPads and Chromebooks across the curriculum.
Impact
Children at Sunshine Academy understand the importance of and how to stay safe online.
They understand and apply the key objectives of computer science and become responsible, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
Children are equipped to use their computing skills in the wider world.
